Street Angels in Skipton have won a Craven Community Champions Award 2012 for making an outstanding contribution to the community. The award for Community Group of the Year was presented to them at a special ceremony attended by 200 people at Coniston Hall Hotel.
The Community Group Award recognises a group who have demonstrated commitment to their project and shown the positive benefits and impact on their community. The award recognises the difference Street Angels have made to the Craven community and the improved well-being of people in Skipton.
At the ceremony, chairman Eileen Appleby received the award on behalf of Skipton Street Angels, some of whom were also able to attend. Eileen said "I am delighted to have received this award on behalf of all the Street Angels here in Skipton. The project has brought together a diverse and committed group of volunteers, mainly from across the local churches. Street Angels enables us to serve our local community by bringing a friendly face to the streets of Skipton on Saturdays and helping people have a safer night out."
The Craven Community Champions Awards were launched by the Craven Herald, Craven District Council, and the Rotary Clubs of Skipton and Skipton & Craven to recognise the invaluable contributions made to Craven’s communities by individuals and groups across the district. From over 60 nominations and a short list of seventeen individuals and groups, one glass star shaped award was made to each winner in the seven main categories.
Skipton MP Julian Smith said: “The Community Champions have shown the depth of talent there is across Craven with so many groups and individuals giving up their own time and effort to do such amazing work. The awards were an opportunity to celebrate that and say thank you to those who do a huge amount for other people. I want to congratulate everyone who won, everyone who was shortlisted and everyone who entered the awards and hope this year’s event will be the first of many, giving us the opportunity to showcase more of the unsung heroes of Craven in the future.”
