At the last Surrey Heath Partnership Meeting we received an update on the Camberley Street Angels from Peter Caddick the new co-ordinator who recently took over from Steve Isherwood. We believe that the work that they do is tremendous.
There are a total of 60 volunteers drawn from Churches Together Camberley. They cover Camberley Town Centre on Friday and Saturday nights between 10 pm and 4 in the morning. On any Friday or Saturday night there will be 6 Angels on duty, with 4 out on the streets at any one time, the other 2 resting. Each pair of Angels consists of 1 female and 1 male.
The mission of the Angels is to provide help to mostly young people who have got into difficulties frequently through too much alcohol. They help people whoever they are and whatever their situation, for example by listening, caring, offering practical help or by referring people to other specialist agencies who can help them.
Practical help includes providing flip-flops for ladies who have fallen off their high heels, help in reaching a taxi and providing clothing against the danger of hyperthermia.
The Angels are highly respected and valued by Surrey Heath Police with whom they are in radio contact. They are also hugely popular with the young people enjoying a lively night out in Camberley. Please see the video blog from Paul Deach’s Surrey Residents Blog.
