A team of heaven-sent heroes are saving the soles of stiletto-wearing Oldham revellers.
Oldham Street Angels go out in all weathers to help people enjoy a safe night out.
The team of dedicated volunteers are in the town centre every weekend to keep an eye on party-goers and give a helping hand to those who need it.
One of their most popular services is free flip flops for tired feet.
Rev Jean Hurlston, who co-ordinates the team, said: “Girls often have trouble walking in their heels especially after a few drinks.
“Whenever we see someone struggling or bare foot we offer them a pair of flip flops. They’re always really amazed and think it’s great.”
Jean is now appealing for businesses to donate any unwanted flip flops to the Street Angels.
She said: “For hygiene reasons we only give brand new pairs. The flip flops have probably saved countless injuries but we’re getting low on stock. It would be fantastic if anyone can help replenish our cupboards – size five seems to be the most popular.”
The Oldham Street Angels were formed just over a year ago and work from a base on Yorkshire Street provided free of charge by a local businessman.
Jean, 58, said: “We’re not on patrol, we try to have a positive presence in the town centre, and we’re there because we care.
“We look out for people who are vulnerable and are just about trying to keep people safe.”
Their work includes sweeping up broken glass, reuniting lost revellers with their friends, and handing out bottles of water at the end of the evening.
Despite Oldham’s nightlife once being likened to the ‘wild west’ Jean says most people are just out to have a good time.
The mum of three said: “ Most of us are mums and that’s what often inspires us – the thought that our children would have someone looking after them on a night out if they needed it.
