"This is not a situation we're going to arrest our way out of.
"Faith matters. There is a place for prayer.
"It's not fashionable to say that but frankly we've not got time for fashion anymore."
Powerful words that are demonstrated week in and week out through the work of Street Angels - CNI Network local projects within 120 communities. Violent crime, sexual assaults and anti-social behaviour reductions is our prove that faith and prayer really do matter. As we go out - yes to help the vulnerable, yes to pick up bottles, yes to give out flip-flops, yes to offer first aid assistance, yes to be a visible presence, yes to be nice to others - the things that are different, and makes the difference, is our faith, prayer and partnership with God!
Thank you again for all those who volunteer - especially as the snow and cold has hit in January - as we carry on the tour of local projects we are always amazed at the commitment of so many and the investment made into local communities.
Please do plan to be at our National Conference in August - it promises to be a fantastic two days..
Paul and Jean
Well done to: Hull Street Angels who helped rescue a man who had fallen into the River Hull last Saturday night; Sanktuary in Telford who revived a woman who had stopped breathing over Christmas; Oldham Street Angels who won Greater Manchester Police Oldham East Community Excellence Award; Suffolk Town Pastors who are Suffolk Charity of the Year - "what you peeps do is the heartbeat of faith"
This year we are encouraging people to not just give up but give out each and every day over Lent by committing to #Do1NiceThing . There are plenty of ideas on our web site and we encourage you to re-tweet and Facebook these and create a wave of niceness across the country!
Another part of Love Your Streets is the partnership with NeighbourhoodPrayer.net who have a vision to see someone on every street in the UK who will 'pray, care and share'. You can sign up to this via the LYS:Pray page on Love Your Streets.
We are encouraging people to pray and #Do1NiceThing simply because #OthersRWorthIt !
- New web site - both the SA-CNI and Love Your Streets web sites have had a makeover!
- Regional Leaders - we had a great weekend at Lamplugh House in Thwing (near Scarborough) where those who could make it through the snow met! Steve and Hazel from Stockton Town Pastors, Paul and Rachael from Norwich Street Partnership, Deborah from Sanktuary Telford, Trevor and Helen from Halifax Street Angels and Paul and Jean had a fun weekend of vision and purpose. We also had contributions from Andy from Dundee Street Chaplains, Derek from Arrun Angels and apologies from Sarah and Iain of Watford Street Angels and Brian and Shona from Scarborough Street Angels. We looked at: ways we can support regional work better; ideas for the conference; accredited training that we plan to make available nationally; opportunities at music festivals, European clubbing centres and at Edinburgh Festival and potential new towns (including Bridlington with Peter and Maddy joining us for a meal). We believe that SA-CNI is going in God's direction and it is exciting to be part of it.
- New Projects - we have chatted to several towns over the last month including Bingley, Darlington, Bridlington and Omagh to name a few! Burton-on-Trent Street Angels went out on the streets for the first time in January (see article from the Bishop of Stafford Rt Rev Geoff Annas). Please pray for those who are involved...
- Edinburgh Festival - we are planning an outreach at the Edinburgh Festival event again between 10th and 16th August - we need musicians to busk, people to chat with folks (performers, visitors, etc) and people to do Street Angel type work at night. Contact Paul if interested. There may also be opportunities to volunteer at various music festivals across the UK.
- New Links / Partner Projects - we have linked with Make Jesus Known (who organise young people's event in Liquid Nighclub Oldham), Lloyds Banking Group (potential of employees supporting / volunteering with local projects), Crossing London as part of the Engaging Communities strand and Club and Pray Wimbledon.
- The Alcohol and Safety Education Resource is to be widely promoted in the coming weeks and it has received great feedback from schools and young peoples groups. The pack can also be used as a way for your project to go into schools, colleges, etc and share about your work. Download the promotional leaflet / visit the web site and download the pack.
We are also planning our August conference and looking at how we can replicate projects such as Street Angels, Club Angels and youth acoustic nights in a better way. This is in addition to the New For 2013 (see the booklet here) which includes insurance cover for local projects, on-line shop, NightStock and YourNight app.
Thanks to Cleethorpes Street Angels who spotted a cheap source of flip-flops - see here.
