From Durham the duo hit home ground with visits to Hartlepool Town Pastors, Stockton Town Pastors, Boro Angels, Redcar Beacons and Guisborough Nightlight We had a great reception at each and visited iconic locations such as the Infinity Bridge in Stockton, the Transporter Bridge and Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough (the Stadium is where our North East England conference will be held on 29th June) and the Redcar Beacon on the seafront (with a customary and much needed Yellow Top!) The new Mayor of Redcar was part of the welcome committee at Redcar even though she had stayed up all night at the General Election count. To beat the forecast weather for Saturday, after Guisborough (with another fantastic welcome from the Nightlight team) the pair rode on towards Whitby - up hill and across the moors.... ... Which was a good idea as the Saturday saw the forecast come true with torrential rain and a strong headwind which slowed the pair down as they cycled from Scaling Dam down into Whitby, across to Scarborough, Bridlington then leaving the coast to Malton. Despite the weather ten of the Whitby Street Angels were out to greet us with a large stick of Whitby rock for each of the team. A great photo and Facebook Live opportunity overlooking Whitby Abbey and Castle from the whalebones. Each project we visited was a great opportunity to catch up and hear news and happenings! Nearly an hour late into Scarborough where the Street, Youth and Community Angels, based at Kingdom Faith church, greeted us with a jacket potato lunch (the promise of which kept Steve and Andy going across the moors!) and an opportunity to escape the wind and rain. Thankfully by the time we had finished lunch the rain had stopped and for a moment we saw sunshine! But sadly the wind speed had increased meaning the miles between Scarborough and Bridlington became particularly hard work. One of the Bridlington Street Angels massage skills came in very useful as cramp was setting in! The pair then set off to Malton - thankfully along roads with hedges that blocked most of the wind! They arrived over 2 hours late at 6.45pm and were whisked off in the support vehicle to a hot shower and much needed fish and chips! Day 3 and thankfully the weather had brightened up and the wind calmed down a little! Leaving Malton the pair were cheered on Tour de Yorkshire style (without the police cavalcade, media motorbikes, helicopter, back up bikes on cars and millions of people) by Paul and Jean on the roadside! They cycled and arrived shortly afterwards outside historic York Minster with a welcome from some of the York Street Angels... After Harrogate the end was in sight! Ripon was a fairly short distance away and Steve and Andy made excellent time arriving ahead of schedule! The promise of another ice cream in Ripon Market Square may have motivated them!!! We met with the small team of volunteers from Ripon City Pastors (above right) who shared some of the stories of help given and appreciation received over the last few weeks.
